Bisiach & Carrù: Advanced Assembly Solutions for the Eurofighter Typhoon’s Left Wing

Bisiach & Carrù has developed an innovative machine for assembling the left wing of the Eurofighter Typhoon, integrating cutting-edge automation solutions.

The system performs key operations, including:

• Liquid shim application on wing ribs and spars.

• Precision pressure control to ensure optimal shim compression.

• Excess shim contouring while maintaining the correct edge margin.

• Drilling and countersinking of the wing skin and ribs with high accuracy.

To ensure proper shim drying, the system features an innovative inflatable pipe mechanism, which dynamically adjusts the tooling surface to securely clamp and press the wing skin.

For maintaining the edge-margin while drilling and contouring, especially when dealing with irregular composite shapes, the robotic system executes reverse engineering on the wing’s internal components. This process gathers precise data to optimize subsequent contouring and drilling operations, ensuring precision and quality.
